The conversion does not apply motor efficiency or power factor. Motor shaft output and electrical input power are different quantities.

How to convert kW to HP or HP to kilovatios

Motor kW, horsepower, efficiency, and current

A motor nameplate power in kW or hp usually identifies rated mechanical shaft output. It is not the same as electrical input power. Input kW is shaft-output kW divided by efficiency, while AC current also depends on supply voltage, phase arrangement, and power factor. A unit conversion alone cannot size a circuito breaker, contactor, cable, overload relay, or VFD.

  • Use the motor nameplate current when available.
  • Do not apply efficiency twice when the entered kW is already electrical input.
  • Service factor and overload capability do not change the unit conversion.
  • Equipment selection must use the exact manufacturer rating table and operating duty.
