kW to HP Calculator and HP to kW Converter

Convert kilowatts to horsepower or horsepower to kilowatts using mechanical, metric, or electrical horsepower definitions.

kW and horsepower conversion equations

Kilowatts and horsepower both express power, but horsepower has several definitions. Select the definition used by the source before converting.

Mechanical: hp = kW / 0.7456998716
Mechanical: kW = hp × 0.7456998716
Metric: PS or CV = kW / 0.73549875
Electrical: hp(E) = kW / 0.746

where:

kW
Power in kilowatts[kW]
hp
Mechanical horsepower
PS / CV
Metric horsepower
hp(E)
Electrical horsepower
K
Kilowatts represented by one horsepower under the selected definition[kW/hp]

The conversion does not apply motor efficiency or power factor. Motor shaft output and electrical input power are different quantities.

How to convert kW to HP or HP to kW

Choose the conversion direction, enter the known power, and select the horsepower definition used by the source. Mechanical horsepower is the normal default for motors and industrial equipment unless the nameplate or document explicitly uses metric PS, CV, or electrical hp(E).

  1. Choose kW to HP or HP to kW.
  2. Enter the known power value.
  3. Select mechanical, metric, or electrical horsepower.
  4. Read the main result and compare the other horsepower definitions.
  5. For motor current, continue with voltage, phase, efficiency, and power factor.

kW to mechanical horsepower formula

Mechanical horsepower is based on 550 foot-pounds per second and equals exactly 745.69987158227022 watts. Because one kilowatt is 1000 watts, divide kW by 0.7456998716 to obtain mechanical horsepower. To convert mechanical horsepower back to kilowatts, multiply by the same factor.

1 kW = 1.34102209 mechanical hp

1 mechanical hp = 0.7456998716 kW

10 kW = 13.4102 mechanical hp

Mechanical hp, metric PS, and electrical hp

Horsepower is not one universal unit. Mechanical horsepower is common on US and international motor references. Metric horsepower is commonly marked PS, CV, pk, or ch depending on language and market. Electrical horsepower is defined as 746 watts and should only be selected when the source explicitly uses that definition.

Motor kW, horsepower, efficiency, and current

A motor nameplate power in kW or hp usually identifies rated mechanical shaft output. It is not the same as electrical input power. Input kW is shaft-output kW divided by efficiency, while AC current also depends on supply voltage, phase arrangement, and power factor. A unit conversion alone cannot size a circuit breaker, contactor, cable, overload relay, or VFD.

  • Use the motor nameplate current when available.
  • Do not apply efficiency twice when the entered kW is already electrical input.
  • Service factor and overload capability do not change the unit conversion.
  • Equipment selection must use the exact manufacturer rating table and operating duty.

Assumptions

  • Mechanical horsepower = 0.7456998716 kW
  • Metric horsepower = 0.73549875 kW
  • Electrical horsepower = 0.746 kW

Important Warnings

  • Motor nameplate kW or hp normally denotes shaft output; electrical input also depends on efficiency and power factor.
  • Confirm whether the source uses mechanical hp, metric PS/CV, or electrical hp before converting.

FAQ

How many horsepower is 1 kW?

Using mechanical horsepower, 1 kW equals approximately 1.34102 hp. It equals about 1.35962 metric PS or 1.34048 electrical hp.

How many kW is 1 hp?

One mechanical horsepower equals 0.7456998716 kW. One metric horsepower equals 0.73549875 kW, while one electrical horsepower equals 0.746 kW.

Are kW and hp motor input power?

Motor nameplate kW and hp commonly describe mechanical shaft output. Supply input power is higher because the motor is not 100% efficient, and AC current calculations also require voltage and power factor.

Which horsepower type should I use?

Use mechanical horsepower for most US and international motor references. Use metric PS or CV when that notation appears on European or automotive data. Use electrical horsepower only when the source explicitly defines hp(E).
