FAQ

Is cable tray fill calculated like conduit fill?

No. Cable tray requirements depend on tray and cable configuration and may use table-based area limits or a single-layer diameter-width rule. Do not apply a conduit 40% rule automatically.

Why must I enter cable outside diameter?

Conductor cross-section is not the installed cable area. Insulation, screens, armor, bedding, and jacket determine the actual outside diameter occupying the tray.

How does the NEC table mode work?

Select the exact rule from the NEC edition adopted for the project, then enter its allowable fill area. The calculator compares the cable-area sum with that value without reproducing or guessing the table.

Does passing fill mean cable ampacity is acceptable?

No. Ampacity, adjustment factors, spacing, bundling, ambient temperature, and conductor installation rules are separate checks.
