Approximate area conversion does not make metric and AWG lugs interchangeable. The cable marking and manufacturer barrel/die chart control the final selection.

How to select a cable lug

Start with the conductor marking and strand class, not outside diameter. Match the approved barrel, conductor and terminal metals, stud hole, palm pattern, environment, and compression or mechanical termination system.

  1. Confirm mm², AWG, or kcmil marking.
  2. Identify copper or aluminum conductor.
  3. Identify equipment terminal metal.
  4. Match stud and palm pattern.
  5. Select finish and approved tool or torque method.

AWG and metric sizes

AWG-to-mm² conversion is useful for comparison but does not make product series interchangeable. For example, 1/0 AWG is about 53.5 mm² and is only a near reference for 50 mm² cable.

Copper, tinned, and bimetallic lugs

Bare copper can suit dry indoor copper-to-copper connections. Tinned copper is a common corrosion-resistant starting point for humid, outdoor, marine, and battery environments. Aluminum conductor connected to copper equipment normally needs an explicitly rated Al-Cu transition connector.

Crimp and palm verification

Compression lugs require the approved die, tool, crimp count, and inspection marks. Mechanical and shear-bolt lugs require conductor-material approval and installation torque. Two-hole palms require exact terminal-pad spacing and orientation.

Important Warnings

  • Do not install a standard copper lug directly on aluminum conductor unless it is explicitly rated for that use.
  • A lug, conductor strand class, die, tool, crimp count, palm, bolt, torque, and terminal pad must be approved as one connection system.

FAQ

Is 1/0 AWG exactly the same as 50 mm²?

No. 1/0 AWG is approximately 53.5 mm². Use the exact conductor marking and the lug manufacturer's chart rather than treating the sizes as interchangeable.

When should I choose tinned copper?

It is a common starting choice for humid, outdoor, marine, battery, or corrosion-prone environments, but it still requires correct crimping and compatible mating surfaces.

Why use a two-hole lug?

Two-hole palms improve anti-rotation support for busbars, switchgear, grounding, and vibration-prone connections when the terminal pad matches the hole spacing.
