American Wire Gauge is a geometric diameter scale. The conversion first calculates nominal solid-wire diameter, then derives circular cross-sectional area; the inverse equation estimates the theoretical AWG number for an entered metric area.

Metric nominal sizes and AWG sizes are independent series. The nearest numerical area may be smaller than the entered size, so the calculator also reports a not-smaller reference.

How to convert mm² to AWG

Enter the conductor cross-sectional area in square millimeters. The calculator applies the AWG geometric equation, identifies the closest listed AWG area, and separately identifies the first AWG size whose nominal area is not smaller than the input.

  1. Choose mm² to AWG.
  2. Enter the marked metric conductor area.
  3. Read the theoretical gauge and nearest listed AWG.
  4. Use the not-smaller result when conductor area must not decrease.
  5. Confirm the actual cable, lug, terminal, and crimp range.

Metric and AWG sizes do not align exactly. For example, 4 mm² is mathematically closest to 11 AWG at about 4.17 mm², while 12 AWG is only about 3.31 mm². A familiar market pairing is not necessarily the closest cross-sectional-area conversion.

Conversion is not ampacity selection

Equal or similar cross-sectional area does not prove equal ampacity, voltage-drop performance, terminal compatibility, or code compliance. Conductor material, strand class, insulation temperature, installation method, ambient temperature, grouping, and terminal ratings still control the final selection.

Important Warnings

  • A numerical conversion does not make metric and AWG cables, lugs, terminals, or crimp dies interchangeable.
  • Stranded conductor outside diameter depends on strand class, compaction, insulation, and manufacturer construction; it cannot be inferred from conductor area alone.

FAQ

Why are the nearest and not-smaller sizes sometimes different?

The nearest gauge minimizes cross-sectional-area error, but it can be slightly smaller than the entered conductor. The not-smaller result is the first listed size whose nominal area is at least the entered area.

Is 4 mm² the same as 12 AWG?

No. The nominal area of 12 AWG is about 3.31 mm², while 11 AWG is about 4.17 mm². Product availability and local conventions may still pair sizes differently, so use the actual cable marking.

Can this converter determine cable ampacity?

No. Ampacity depends on conductor material, insulation, temperature, installation method, grouping, terminals, and the applicable wiring standard.
